Augustus "Gus" Harris

January 1, 2018
Augustus Edward “Gus” Harris, 79, of Bay City, our knowledgeable, hardworking, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, was born into eternal life on the morning of Sunday, August 26, 2018 at his home. Gus was born on September 16, 1938 in Essexville, the son of the late Augustus and Sarah (Shorkey) Harris. Gus graduated from Bay City Central and went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Maintenance. During the summer of 1956, while walking home from Steven’s Dairy on Third Street, Gus met the former Colleen Cox. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on May 9, 1959. Gus was President of the United Cement and Gypsum Workers and went on to retire from General Motors. Those who knew Gus, knew of his love of watching football and baseball, cruising in his Corvette, taking long Sunday rides to the casino, and hunting deer, turkeys, partridges, and bears. He was a member of the Bay Valley Corvette Club and holds the title of the Biggest Bear in Oscoda County in 2001; the bear was displayed in Lansing. Above all, Gus will be remembered for the love he had for his family, and will be missed dearly. Gus leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 59 years, Colleen; their children, Laurie Harris, Bud Harris, and Michael (Zoe) Harris; grandchildren, Sarah Harris, Buddy (Elizabeth) Harris, Patricia Harris (Jessica Li), Russel Harris, Bailey Martens, and Kenneth Mochrie; great-grandchildren, Alayah Jones, Xavioh Barber, Olivia and Flint Harris; brothers, Donald Harris and Richard Harris, along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, Gus was welcomed home to heaven by his sister, Elane (Paul) Andre; sister-in-law, Georgeanne Harris, and his in-laws, Agnes and Joseph Cox. Gus' family will be present to receive visitors on Saturday, September 1, 2018 from 10:00 AM until his 11:00 AM Tribute Ceremony at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 955. N. Pine Rd., Hampton Twp. Fr. Dale Orlik will officiate with a Life Celebration Cocktail Hour & Reception immediately following in The Wesley Room at Skorupski's. May the Lord comfort you. What wonderful memories your family can share. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sharon and I have many fond memories of traveling and enjoying each others company in many North American locations with the Corvettes. Many trips to Ontario, Kentucky, Also to include South Dakota, Colorado, Bamff Alberta, and South Carolina, and Tennesse, not to mention most interesting car events in Michigan. He was a good friend to Sharon and I, a Loving Husband to Colleen and father to his family, Lorie, Bud, and Mike. As late as last summer as we traveled back on the winding roads of West Virginia, barely able to keep up with him and Colleen, and that infamous Little Red Corvette returning from Myrtle Beach. S.C. We will deeply miss him and and the frequent bear conversations of Yellowstone and his 13th. Largest ever recorded in Michigan, Black Bear that he harvested in 2000. The club members led by Bev Havercamp as suggested by Steve Mc Donald and the other pre deceased 11 members are probably on Heavans track racing right now. RIP Gus and enjoy the ride. Sam and Sharon.
Kay and I was sadden to hear of Gus’s passing. Our hearts are heavy he…was one great man. I looked for him and Colleen every week at the Gas Station (Sams) just to get a chance to talk with the two and converse with Gus about the lastest news of the week…Gus you will be truely missed. RIP Gus Harris and have fun partying we the Corvette friends that have passed and family and friends.
We had the pleasure of meeting Gus and Colleen in 2002 in Wasaga Beach, Ontario. We shared many fun conversations regarding the Detroit Red Wings versus the Toronto Maple Leafs, Makers Mark versus Crown Royal (bagged whiskey) and electrical escapades. We also enjoyed several adventures with our corvettes.
We are going to miss you Gus very much.
Our condolences to Colleen and family.

Oh Colleen, I am so sorry for your loss. This is Maggie, Ellie’s mail lady. We met when she passed….when you, Gus and Bud came to Arizona to take care of her estate (I still use and cherish the little antique table of Ellie’s that you gave to me). I only met him/you on that occasion, but I remember a very sweet and dedicated man. My sincere condolences to you and your family.

I am so sorry for your lost. I worked with Gus at Bay City Powertrain for 5 yrears. He was a great guy. He never had a bad word for anyone. It would perk me up as soon as I seen him. He would always joke about the day. I also knew him from car shows. He never made fun of me not having a corvette, maybe because I have a red car also. He will truly be missed. RIP old friend. Sincerely yours Walter Brethauer
