Brad Allen Kocks, 37, of Bay City, our positive, thoughtful, and caring father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend was born into eternal life on Sunday, March 6, 2016. Brad was born in Saginaw on August 11, 1978, the son of Edward Kocks and Joan (Grocholski) Mazzara. He graduated with the Class of 1997 from Bay City Central. Throughout life, Brad was known for his love of sports, especially U of M, Detroit Tigers, and the Red Wings. Brad served in the U.S. Marines during Operation Iraqi Freedom, receiving the following awards: Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" device, and the Rifle Expert Badge. Brad was an outstanding athlete in football and basketball, but especially baseball; he inspired many. His heart was larger than life, and he left a lasting impact on all who were fortunate to cross paths with him. Brad leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Braxton O'Dell, and special friend, Megen O'Dell; mother, Joan Mazzara; father, Edward Kocks and wife, Judy; grandmother, Lila Grocholski; step-father, Larry Mazzara; brother, Eric Kocks and wife, Erica; step-siblings, Elaina Richards and husband, Grady, Bobby Mazzara and wife, Kerrie, Kim Swantko and husband, Matt, Lisa Jesse and husband, Glenn, along with many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Brad was welcomed home to heaven by his grandparents, Eugene Grocholski, Julia Charleton, Carl Kocks, and his uncle, David Grocholski. Brad's family will be present to receive visitors on Thursday, March 10, 2016 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Vigil for Brad at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 955 N. Pine Rd., Hampton Twp. On Friday, March 11, 2016, Brad will be taken to Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish (St. Stanislaus Kostka Church), 1503 Kosciuszko Ave., Bay City, where visiting will continue from 9:00 AM until the time of his 10:00 AM Funeral Liturgy. Fr. Rick Filary will officiate with the Rite of Committal to follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family, c/o Joan Mazzara for the establishment of an educational fund for Brad's son, Braxton. I am sorry to hear of Brad’s passing. I feel I knew him only briefly when he had a paper route (I worked for the Bay City Times) but he impressed me as a energetic and positive young man.
