Douglas James Bernelis

January 17, 2017
Douglas James Bernelis, 28, of Bay City, our vibrant and rambunctious son, father, brother, and most loyal friend passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Douglas, known by many of his friends as “Dougie Fresh” and “Dougie” to his family was born in Bay City on September 16, 1988, the son of William and Colleen (Stuckey) Bernelis. Dougie enjoyed skateboarding, video games, and most of all, spending time with his friends. He was the life of the party and his presence alone would light up the entire room. Dougie will be deeply missed, but lovingly remembered by all the lives he touched. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beautiful daughter, Leah Bernelis; mother, Colleen Bernelis; father, Bill Bernelis; sister, Amber Bernelis; the love of his life and soulmate and Leah's mother, Crystal Swartz, along with his grandparents, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Dougie’s family will be present to receive visitors on Saturday, January 21, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of his 1:00 PM Tribute Ceremony at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 955 N. Pine Rd., Hampton Twp. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family, c/o Colleen Bernelis. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family online at www.skorupskis.com. The family requests those in attendance to please wear jeans to best honor Dougie's life.
I’m so sorry you have struggled with this for over 10 years. I wish there was a way I could change things but that’s not how life goes. Looking back at the photos of growing up I remember how you used to be before the drugs took you over and I will miss you a lot, I hope that you are done with your suffering. I love you
Though my words do little I hope my prayers will help you at this difficult time. Sorry for the loss of your son.
