Frederick Charles Sullivan

Frederick Charles Sullivan, 86, of Gagetown, our outgoing, humorous, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend was born into eternal life on November 11, 2023, at Tuscola County Medical Care Community with his family by his side.

Fred was born on June 3, 1937 in Bay City to the late Michael and Marguerite (Bigsby) Sullivan. A graduate of St. Louis High School, Fred pursued higher education at Ferris State before continuing his studies at Michigan State University in the Farmers Elevator Course. With his agricultural background, Fred began his professional career at the Farmers Elevator in West Branch. His path took a detour when he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served with distinction in the 24th Evac Hospital Medic Unit in San Antonio, Texas. Upon his return, Fred contributed to the Apollo Space Program by working at Wellman Bronze Aluminum, and later at Evans Products, where he served as a comptroller for their esteemed management team. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Fred established his own consulting business, One Source Design and Engineering, and collaborated with Delphi on various projects.

While attending church one Sunday, he met the former Margaret “Cathy” Pray. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on November 26, 1960. Their love and partnership were a testament to their strong bond, and a great legacy that they will leave with their children in the years to come.

Fred was a true testament to the power of compassion and generosity. With a warm smile and an outgoing nature, he effortlessly connected with everyone he encountered. Fred’s selflessness and dedication to others made him a pillar in the community, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

A faithful servant of God, Fred was a devout and active member of St. Jude Thaddeus Church. His unwavering commitment to his faith was evident in his role as a lay minister, where he compassionately ministered to those in need. Fred found solace and strength through his spiritual journey and led by example, embodying the virtues of kindness and compassion.

As a proud Michigan State University fan, Fred enthusiastically cheered on the Spartans in every game. He loved sports, particularly his beloved Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, and shared many joyous moments celebrating their victories and commiserating in their defeats.

Fred had a deep appreciation for his Irish heritage, taking great pride in his roots. He fondly recalled his trips to Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Hawaii, creating cherished memories and forging lasting friendships along the way. An avid quilter, fisherman, woodworker, and birding enthusiast, Fred found peace and tranquility in the simple pleasures of life.

Fred’s commitment to his community extended beyond his professional life. He selflessly served with the Lions International as a global leader and took an active role in humanitarian service. His dedication to the cause over the years earned the distinct honor of becoming a Centennial District Governor. Fred was also a part of his local Fire Department, ensuring the safety and security of his neighbors. Additionally, Fred actively participated in the Knights of Columbus, attaining the prestigious fourth degree. Through these organizations, he found a sense of camaraderie and purpose, lending his hand to those requiring assistance.

Fred’s legacy of compassion, community involvement, and unwavering faith will forever linger in the hearts of his loved ones. He leaves behind a devoted network of family and friends who will cherish the memories they shared with him.
Fred leaves to carry his legacy to his loving wife, Cathy; his children, Robin (Christopher) Scurto, Michael (Carolyn) Sullivan, and Rita (Paul) Lopez; grandchildren, Trace (Kendra) Lopez, Adam (Lindsay) Scurto, Blake (Jacquelyn) Scurto, Tanner Scurto, Hannah Sullivan, Matthew Sullivan, and Cameron Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Jayven Lopez, Kenzleigh Lopez, Liam Lopez, Madaleigh Lopez, Miles Scurto, and Dean Scurto; siblings, Marilyn Smith and Bob (Mary) Sullivan; sister-in-law, Mickey (Larry) Gavitt, and many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Fred was welcomed home by his brother-in-law, Herb Smith.

Fred’s family will be present to receive visitors on Thursday, November 16, 2023 from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:00 PM Vigil at Skorupski Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 821 N. Pine Rd., between Ridge and Center. On Friday, November 17, 2023, Fred will be taken to St. Jude Thaddeus Parish (St. John the Evangelist Church), 614 Pine St., Essexville, where visiting will continue from 10:00 AM until Fred’s 11:00 AM Funeral Mass. Fr. Dale Orlik and Fr. Rick Bokinskie will preside. The Rite of Committal will be held at Brookside Cemetery, West Branch.
