Helen May Schafer, 88, of Hampton Twp., formerly of Unionville and Sebewaing, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend entered into eternal life on the evening of Monday, December 25, 2017 at Bay Medical Care Facility with her family by her side. Helen was born in Detroit on December 24, 1929 to the late Gus and Katherine (Schneider) Klatt. She graduated from Akron High School in 1948 and went on to marry Donald Arthur Schafer on September 4, 1948. Together they shared three children and 53 years of marriage. Donald predeceased Helen on November 9, 2001. Helen was a dedicated homemaker and worked for several years as a part-time real estate agent. She belonged to Unionville Moravian Church, where she was a very dedicated member. Throughout life, Helen loved hunting; going on one successful elk hunt and one successful bear hunt when she was younger, and deer hunting until she was 81. Helen also enjoyed bowling, traveling, going to musical concerts and events, and above all, being a grandma. Helen leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Judy (Duane) Birchmeier of Bay City, John (Kathy) Schafer of Lupton, and James (Dianna) Schafer of Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren, Steven (Tina) Matthews, Jason Matthews, Vickie (Jake) Smith, Rebecca Avers, Adam (Danielle) Schafer, and Mark (Megan) Schafer; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Danielle, Haley, and Steven Matthews, Nash and Noah Matthews, Pete, Mark, and Madeline Smith, Matthew and Shannon Avers, Dennis Schafer, Lilli and Jaxin Mercer, and Peyton and Morris Schafer; siblings, Emma Krause, William (Dee) Klatt, Elsie Roth, Katherine (Richard) Falkenhagen, Gus (Joyce) Klatt, Betty Klatt, Mary Earl, and Ronald (Ann) Klatt, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was welcomed home to heaven by her brother, Frank Klatt; sister, Margaret Fiorito; brother-in-law, Arold Schafer, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Schafer. Helen’s family will be present to receive visitors on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 10:00 AM until her 11:00 AM Funeral Ceremony at Unionville Moravian Church, 2711 Cass St., Unionville.
