Robert Scott McRae, 60, of Harper Woods, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Robert was born July 5, 1953 in Seward, Alaska to Albert and Margaret (Rhone) McRae, and baptized and confirmed in the Seward Lutheran Church. He was the baby of the family and enjoyed a happy childhood. His family survived the earthquake and tsunami of Good Friday 1964. Robert left Alaska after graduating from Kenai Central High School to fulfill his dream of traveling the world. Having a lifelong love of all animals, Robert ultimately became a dog handler and trainer. After settling in Detroit, he worked as a dog groomer and antiques dealer. His passions included gardening and interior decorating, not just for himself, for also for his extended family and friends. He was well known for his tales of adventure around the world. While working as a groomer at This-n-That for Pets in Grosse Pointe, Robert developed a special friendship with the business' owner, Lee Meyer, that lasted until his death. It was at this same job where he met his loving partner of over twenty years, Joel Sewick, whose death in 2010 Robert mourned every single day. Robert is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Margaret McRae, his partner Joel, and his brother Roger. He is survived by a brother Doug (Diane) McRae, sister Linda (Steve) MacSwain, two nephews and one niece. Robert was an exceptionally generous, selfless and loyal friend whose passing will be deeply mourned by many loving friends and members of his extended family.

  1. So very sad. What a lovely man. He had such a positive and wonderful presence. I know he will be greatly missed, especially by two of his best friends.

  2. Robert – It is with such sadness that I write this note. As you know, I always believed in you. You were so talented and a master of your craft. All your “dogs” loved you and were so glad to see you when getting groomed. Your love and appreciation of life’s finest things was amazing. I will miss our dinners on Friday or Saturday night with Jayme as we solved the problems of the world. We so loved our good bottles of wine and each others company. And, we all had such fun in the summer at Partridge Creek shopping with the pooches. I know that you really missed Joel because you so often talked about him. Now you can be with him, Cutter and your cats. I will continue to pray for you to be safe and forever happy in heaven. All my love, Debbie Graziani, Gucci and Gigi, your buddies

  3. Robert – You will be greatly missed. Loved your friendship, talent and appreciation for all of life’s finest. You can now relax and enjoy your time with Joel and all your furry friends in heaven. Love you . . . Debbie Graziani

  4. Bob, you were a good, kind man with a heart of gold. You were so, so good for Joel. Although you will be missed greatly here on earth, Joel needed you more with him in Heaven. Thank you for taking such good care of him, even on “the other side”. Now he can see that beautiful smile of hours that always came so easy. I will miss you! Be at peace, my friend…and may you share many laughs with our friend!

  5. Bob your leaving was to soon. You was my no you are my best friend. We shared a lot of laughter,a lot of hugs and who could forget our road trip adventures. You will always be in my heart . God must have wonderful plans for you. Go with him now and enjoy your peace. Your friend, your soul sister. Dona

  6. Bob, my dear, kind, generous friend (and co conspirator)…….no more Sunday adventures…..no garage sales, Frankenmuth, decorating, gardening, restaurants…….I will miss you everyday…but especially on Sunday. Rest peacefully…….thank you for adding so much to so many lives….love, Jan

  7. Bob, you will be sadly missed. Your care, talent and love you gave my “girls” will be hard to be replaced since you where one of a kind. Life never seemed the same since Joel left and that void was never filled in your life. May your new journey with Joel bring you both peace that you both deserve as your sprits live on together. Love Suzanne Sillery andthe girls Muffie and Fluffy.
