Celeste S. Wright nee Nostrand, our beautiful and loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away surrounded by loved ones at MidMichigan Midland Hospital on Monday, June 28, 2021. She is now free of pain after a 16 month battle with cancer. Her loved ones will continue to live their life to the fullest in her honor. Celeste was born January 5, 1955 in Queens, New York, the oldest of two children born to Caroline Maretzky and Frank Nostrand. During her developmental years she was reared by her great grandmother Anna Hansen in New Jersey and Florida. During her middle school years she began living with her mother and stepfather, Herschel Spooner in Flint, MI. Celeste graduated from Flint Central High School in 1973. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Olivet College in Psychology and Sociology in 1976 and obtained her Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from University of Detroit in 1982. She also completed a program at Harvard University’s John F Kennedy School of Government in Regulatory Reform. On August 28, 1982 Celeste married the love of her life, John Wright. She is survived by her husband, two children, who were the lights of her life, Benjamin Wright of Chicago, IL and Rebecca Wright (Tim Putman) of Bay City, MI. She has one beautiful granddaughter, Leah Putman, who called Celeste, “Anna.” She also is leaving three half-sisters, Paula Coleman of Baytown, TX, Carol Short of Clio, MI, and Kathleen Spooner of Davison, MI. Celeste retired from a life of service from the Michigan Department of Corrections. She spent 33 years in corrections, the last 15 years as a supervisor for Circuit Court Probation in Flint, MI. She was a groundbreaker, being one of the first females to serve in many of these positions. In addition to her full-time employment, she was an adjunct faculty member for 20 years at Ferris State University, University of Michigan, and Delta College. She received the Lynn Heatly Award for distinguished service as an adjunct faculty member from Delta College. Celeste was a Master Gardener and was renowned for her pottery work and cooking abilities. She was a past recipient of the Woman of the Year by the local chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. She loved to travel, having visited 48 states and 15 foreign countries. She served on numerous boards for agencies in the Bay City and Flint areas. She was appointed by Governor John Engler to the Chapter 11 Governor's Advisory Committee. Celeste’s hard work, dedication, love, and infectious smile will be missed dearly for years to come. The family of Celeste would like to express great appreciation and gratitude for the care and love that the team of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at MidMichigan Midland Hospital provided. Celeste’s family will be present to receive visitors on Thursday, July 1, 2021 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 821 N. Pine Rd., between Ridge & Center. On Friday, July 2, 2021, Celeste will be taken to Essexville Community Church, 1001 Main St., Essexville, where visiting will continue from 10:00 AM until the time of her 11:00 AM Funeral Ceremony. Pastor Dennis DeMott will officiate with inurnment to be held privately in Heavenly Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Celeste’s honor to the American Cancer Society or her church, the Essexville Community Church in Essexville, MI.
